3 Signs of a Faulty Water Heater

Nobody wants to deal with a broken down water heater unable to supply hot water for the home. Luckily, most water heaters show signs they need repair or replacement before this happens. Homeowners who can’t tell if their water heater is malfunctioning should consider if they have noticed the following signs. This blog post will share a few common signs that the water heater needs service, whether it be repair, maintenance, or replacement.

Banging and Popping Noises

sounds

Water heaters are supposed to be quiet. If homeowners hear unusual popping or banging noises, this may indicate excess sediment in the tank, which can cause problems like inefficiency and corrosion. Typically this sediment is removed from the water heater during routine maintenance, but if maintenance is neglected, it can have more severe consequences.

If a tank is allowed to corrode, it will need replacement, making keeping up with water heater maintenance essential. During maintenance, a plumber will drain and flush the hot water tank to remove the sediment buildup and replace the anode rod to prevent tank corrosion. However, if these sounds are heard, it’s crucial to have the water heater serviced in order to prevent the sediment from damaging the water heater.

Smelly or Discolored Water

Another common sign the water heater needs professional attention is if the hot water comes out of the tap discolored or smells bad. The anode rod will eventually corrode inside the water heater and need to be replaced, which may cause the hot water to come out reddish-brown or smell bad.

A corroded hot water tank can also cause the hot water to look rust-colored and smell bad. When corrosion occurs with a water heater, repair may not be an option anymore, and replacing the water heater may be the best solution. A plumber can help homeowners determine whether a water heater can be salvaged.

Leaks

Even small cracks in the tank can cause serious problems. A leaking water heater will not only cease to provide as much hot water but also cost homeowners more in monthly utility bills. If the water heater is leaking due to a crack in the tank or tank corrosion, replacement may be the best option.

If the water heater leaks from the pressure relief valve, a pipe connection, or another valve, it may only need to be tightened or repaired. It depends on factors like the leak's severity and the water heater's condition. If homeowners notice any of these signs from their water heaters, a plumber should be called right away before the problem gets worse.
